The Road

A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don't know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food - and each other.

The Road is the profoundly moving story of a journey. It boldly imagines a future in which no hope remains, but in which the father and his son, “each the other's world entire,” are sustained by love. Awesome in the totality of its vision, it is an unflinching meditation on the worst and the best that we are capable of: ultimate destructiveness, desperate tenacity, and the tenderness that keeps two people alive in the face of total devastation.

Hard reading in style and in subject matter. There were moments that were truly atrocious and disturbing and other moments where it was hard to comprehend and keep track of what was happening because of the prose. Still however, I enjoyed the book, just probably wouldn't recommend it and didn't think it deserved the buzz that it did. Also, this and every other post-apocalyptic book I've ever read just cements my desire to NOT EVER SURVIVE an apocalypse. I would like to go as soon as something happens thank you very much and with as little pain as possible 🤣.

Also, can someone please explain to me why they had to move on from the bunker that they found? It had copious amounts of food and water, comfortable sleeping conditions and even an inside toilet! I'm sure that the father could've hidden the entrance properly or even locked it tightly from the inside so no one could get in? At the very least you'd stay there until the food and water ran out wouldn't you?! Just because the book is called The Road, it shouldn't mean you literally have to stay on the road until you die?!
