[Read: 05 February 2023]Brilliant book and very well written. Post-apocalyptic and apocalyptic books are my all-time favourites even though reading about zombies (no zombies in this book though) and dead people freak the hell out of me.
After reading this book, it's not the being alone that would bother me but all the dead bodies and huge rats that I wouldn't be able to deal with. Trying to survive on your own is bad enough, but having to contend with those two things would be a bit too much for me! That's why motto is never to survive an apocalyptic event.
The ending wasn't to my liking however as I don't like endings that aren't cut and dry and I really wanted to know what happened to the MC, whether she ended up finding other people. I know some kind of civilisation survived and it alluded to the MC surviving the birth of her daughter and her daughter surviving as well but I just wanted more. I like to be told what happened at the end of a book and not something I have to work out for myself. I didn't write the book, so the author needs to tell me what happened, and it needs to be all wrapped up in a neat little bow for me.
Despite the ending I highly enjoyed the book as it was nice to read an apocalyptic book that didn't involve violence and depravity towards women and other weaker men. Big props for that but I guess when there are no other humans around, violence towards each other would be minimal.
For a mess of a character and in some moments outright annoyance towards the MC, I just couldn't put this book down. I wanted the MC to survive, and I wanted to know her story. Love the addition of the golden retriever because who wouldn't want one to be with you at the end of the world?!
Well worth a read if you like this kind of genre. It was moving, gripping, very emotional and so heart wrenching at times.
